Markup is profit divided by cost; margin is profit divided by price, so margin is always the smaller number – a 30% markup is a 23% margin. To convert: margin = markup ÷ (1 + markup), markup = margin ÷ (1 − margin).

Most contractors mark up parts and materials somewhere between 35% and 100%, small parts by 150% to 300%, and big-ticket equipment by 20% to 50% (Build-Folio, Mr. HVAC). The exact number depends on the trade, the part's price, and whether it carries a warranty. The floor for a specialty contractor is 35% on the whole job – labor, materials, and subs together (Michael Stone, Markup & Profit).
Mark up labor on what it costs you, not on your billing rate – a billing rate already has overhead and profit in it. The loaded labor cost is wage plus payroll taxes, workers' comp, and benefits; in construction those extras add about 44 cents on every wage dollar (BLS, June 2026). A tech paid $30 an hour costs you about $43.

Subtract cost from price, divide by cost, multiply by 100. A part that cost $80 and sells for $100 has a 25% markup. To price from a markup, multiply cost by one plus the markup: $80 × 1.25 = $100.
$125. The profit is $25, and the margin is 20% – profit divided by the $125 price.
No. A 30% markup on $100 gives a $130 price and $30 profit. That profit is 23% of the price, so the margin is 23%. To get a 30% margin you need a 43% markup.
Industry guides put standard parts at 1.5 to 3 times cost, small parts at 3 to 5 times, and equipment over $1,000 at 1.3 to 1.8 times. Most shops use a sliding scale where cheaper parts get the higher markup.
There is no single average. Michael Stone's floor for specialty contractors is 35% on the whole job, labor included; HVAC service shops publish 2 to 2.5 times loaded labor cost. Mark up the cost of the hours – wage plus roughly 44% burden (BLS) – not a billing rate that already includes overhead.
The math is exact. The defaults – 50% on parts, 40% on labor – are conservative starting points inside published industry ranges, not your numbers. Change them to your own rates; the result is only as good as the cost you enter.
